Bitter kola which some people know as Garcinia Kola is a medicinal plant indigenous to Western and Central Africa
The seed has a bitter sharp flavor that gradually becomes slightly sweet as you chew it and it can be eaten raw
How Does Bitter Kola Work on the Body
Bitter kola has long been used to treat infections ranging from the common cold to hepatitis.

Bitter kola contains a lot of antioxidants. Bitter kola contains a high concentration of antioxidants, which aids the body’s immune system.
Bitter kola provides numerous benefits to the body due to the presence of important nutrients.
These nutrients help in dealing with health conditions like
- Diabetes
- Inflammation

What is the Effect of Bitter Kola on Sperm Count
There are mixed research reports on the effects of bitter kola on sperm, here one report claims that
Garcinia kola treatment resulted in increased testicular weights, increased sperm count with no change in motility, and increased serum testosterone levels with no change in gonadotropin levels across all doses.
Treatment had no effect on gross testicular histology. We conclude that Bitter kola seed extract has strong aphrodisiac activity in male albino rats, with an increase in sperm count and testosterone levels as a result.
The other report claims that
According to the findings of this study, Garcinia Kola seed reduced serum testosterone levels, semen counts, and semen motility; all of these effects were time-dependent and reversible.
In conclusion, one report says bitter kola increased sperm count, while the other report claims bitter kola reduced sperm count
So at this point, there is no conclusive evidence as to if bitter kola increase or decreases sperm count

The Effect of Bitter Kola on Female Fertility
Bitter kola contains nutrients and vitamins that are beneficial during pregnancy. It is the best supplement for pregnant women in Africa.
Bitter kola has a number of health benefits, including
- The treatment of nausea and vomiting
- The improvement of uterine health
- The strengthening of pregnant women
- The normalization of blood circulation in pregnant women.
Can Bitter Kola Affect Ovulation?
This is a good question to address for women who are trying to conceive. Findings suggest that administration of Bitter kola seed extract may partially block ovulation, alter the oestrous cycle with a prolonged dioestrous period, and have a dose-dependent negative effect on foetal development in S-D rats.
The Effect of Bitter Kola on Male Fertility
Some believe that Bitter kola seed improves male sexual performance, but existing scientific data shows conflicting results. The sexual and reproductive effects of ethanol (70%) seed extract of G. kola were investigated in Wistar rats in this study.
Concentrate at doses of 0, 50, 100, 200 or 300mg kg-1 day 1 were introduced by a tube into the stomach of adult male rats for 30 days before mating with female rats after sexual activity attributes were carefully evaluated.
After mating, serum testosterone, LH, and FSH concentrations, as well as epididymal sperm pointers, were computed, and the pregnancy rate and litter size of female rats were documented. The extract (50 mg kg-1) treatment had no effect on sexual activities, but higher doses reduced them compared to the control.
Furthermore, except at 50 mg kg-1, extract treatment reduced sperm count {p0.0001}, viability {p = 0.0011}, testosterone, and FSH (p0.0001). LH was unaffected, but abnormal sperm morphology was increased (p0.05). Furthermore, when measured to guides, the pregnancy rate and litter size in extract (100-300 mg kg-1) treated rats were lower.
The findings suggest that low doses of Bitter kola seed have no effect on sexual activity, whereas high doses have a negative impact on fertility by altering sexual behavior, testosterone levels, and sperm indices.
